“We received with sadness the news of the passing of His Highness Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Salem Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, may God keep him in his mercy. On behalf of the people and Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of the Republic of Nicaragua, we express our deepest condolences to the brotherly people and government of Kuwait, as well as to the Al-Sabah Family, and to himself,” the Nicaraguan leader said.

May God keep him in his glory,” Ortega added.

Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah has passed away at the age of 98 after holding several important official and honorary posts, as well as being involved in a number of social projects in his country.

He was born in 1926 in the Al-Sheoukh neighbourhood and “began his tutelage under the guidance of Al-Mulla Hamada and Al-Mulla Marshad Al-Sulieman, as was the tradition at the time,” the Kuwait Times recalled, adding that Salem received a scientific and literary education at prestigious schools in his country.

“In the early 1950s and after oil revenues began to accelerate the country’s development, Sheikh Salem joined the public service, where he led a number of projects that contributed to the construction of the country and the modernization of its way of life,” it added.

Following Kuwait’s independence in 1961, Salem engaged in activities of historical significance, the first of which was his participation in the writing of the country’s constitution. He subsequently served as Minister of Public Works, Chief of Kuwait National Guard, and President.
